DGC Press
an atypical publisher
|
DGC
Press is not your typical publisher. Somewhere in the mostly uncharted realm
amid conventional publishers and subsidy publishers, DGC is the “happy medium”
between the harsh extremes of conventional and subsidy publishing.
What’s
so harsh about the extremes?
A conventional publisher will evaluate
your manuscript and decide whether or not to publish it, based largely upon its
sales potential. But as almost any new author who’s traveled this road can tell
you, it’s unbelievably difficult to be accepted by one of these publishers.
Even good books routinely meet with rejection, not because they lack quality,
but because the publisher doesn’t feel they would be easy to sell. It’s a sad
but true fact, these days, that a conventional publisher will not promote any
but the most popular authors. And the bookstore shelf-life of a mid-list book
is typically no more than a few months.
A subsidy publisher, on the other hand,
will publish anyone, no matter how good or bad the work, no matter how great or
poor its sales potential. These companies make money from charging you for the
costs of publication. They don’t make money (or much, anyway) from actual book
sales. One of the biggest problems with this route is that of respectability.
When anyone with a few hundred bucks can publish a book, a lot of really bad
books get published. Almost no bookstore will carry something published in this
fashion, and almost no authors published this way even recoup their
investments.
Knowing
this, some authors opt for traditional self-publishing. But publishing is a
business, and most authors are in the business of writing. They haven’t the
expertise to properly publish a book, the business savvy to market it, or the
willingness to devote precious writing time to publishing and marketing.
Enter
DGC Press. We’re like a conventional publisher in that we will not publish just
anything. A book has to be good! Sales potential is secondary to the quality of
the book itself. We will reject far more manuscripts than we accept. And we
will publish only certain types of manuscripts. But unlike a conventional
publisher, we’ll actually help you with the promotion of your titles.
The
author, however, absorbs at least some of the costs of publication, as with a
subsidy publisher. However, we think you’ll find that with DGC Press, you’ll
get far more bang for your buck than with our competitors. And unlike a subsidy
publisher, we’ll actually work with you on making your manuscript, and finished
book, as good as it can be. Think of us as your partner, who will hold your
hand through the maze of publishing, marketing, and everything you need to
bring your work into the world.
